This viola was made by James Radford Coggin in New York in 1978. Coggin was an American maker born in North Carolina, initially beginning his career in art and sculpture, exhibiting paintings at the Hilda Carmel Gallery in New York. Having been a musician his whole life, he eventually quit his day job after taking a summer course in instrument repair at Hofstra University in New York, making three violas in his first year between 1968 and 1969. Over the course of his career, he made 50 violins and 107 violas, and his instruments ended up being played in the Tokyo and the American String Quartets, as well as in many top orchestras worldwide.

This viola is labelled "James Radford Coggin / New York / No. 53 1978". The body measures 425mm along the back, 201mm across the upper bouts and 247mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of maple, with a light, shallow rippling of flame, and matching ribs and scroll. The front is of tightly grained spruce, and it has a an ebony tailpiece and chinrest, with boxwood pegs. The varnish is a golden-brown, and it is in good condition.

The viola has a rich, deep sound and is most suited for performance at a tertiary level or higher. In the lower register, it has a very wide, almost cellistic sound, which is balanced on the top end by a sweet and mellow A. It doesn't lack in projection however, maintaining a underlying core of power which can cut through just as easily as it blends, making it just as capable in chamber music as it is in solo and orchestral playing.
