French Violin c.1900 1/4-1/2

This is an unlabelled French violin made around 1900. The body measures 301mm along the back, 140mm across the upper bouts and 175mm across the lower bouts. It has a one-piece back of highly flamed maple with a tight curl, and matching ribs and scroll. The top is a finely grained spruce, and the violin is finished with ebony fittings and a light amber varnish. It is in good condition. 

It possesses a remarkably clear and complex sound for a fractional instrument, with a generally dark and smoky character, and plenty of projection. It has good playability and would best fit a young violinist beginning to move into more mature repertoire like concertos or virtuosic pieces.
