This cello was made by Matteo Mazzotti in Piacenza, in 2023. Mazzotti learned the craft of instrument making while attending the Istituto Liutario ‘A Stradivari’ in Cremona and undertook private lessons with various master luthiers in Italy. In 2000, he received his degree as ‘Maestro Liutaio’ with full marks. After working with Master Massimo Negroni to improve his knowledge of the classic Cremonese style of violin-making, he opened his own workshop in Piacenza. This cello comes with a beautiful certificate of authenticity in the form of a book with high-quality photos, along with a description of the instrument and its parts from the maker.

It is labelled "Matteo Mazzotti / cremonensis / Fece in Piacenza / Anno 2023" and is based on a Stradivarius model. The body measures 758mm along the back, 346mm across the upper bouts and 450mm across the lower bouts. It has two-piece back of moderately flamed maple with a tight curl, and matching ribs and scroll. The front is a tightly grained spruce, with an amber-gold varnish and ebony fittings.

This cello has an overall bright and clear tone, full of all the classic Italianate qualities Mazzotti excels at creating in all his instruments, and has a very clear sense of articulation in all registers. It projects all tones and characters with ease, and carries a lot of focus across large distances for halls and larger venues. It would be most well suited to players at a tertiary or professional level.
