This cello was made by Rainer Beilharz in 2008 in Castlemaine, Australia. Beilharz began making instruments when he was 18 years old in 1982 in Melbourne, Australia. He spent 7 years working in Germany with Bernard Franke & Antoine Muller. In 1997 he returned to Australia to continue making instruments full time. Beilharz has participated in the Oberlin violin making workshops in the USA since 2007. He is a member of the ‘Entente Internationale des Luthiers et Archetiers’ & a founding member of the ‘Australian Violin Makers Association.’ He has won various awards internationally including three certificates of merit & a total of four silver medals at the VSA competitions in the USA since 2012.

This cello is labelled ‘Rainer Beilharz, Australia’ & signed ‘Rainer Beilharz, 2008.’ The body measures 737mm along the back, 355mm across the upper bouts & 441mm across the lower bouts. The back is made from an extraordinary piece of poplar & the top is made from spruce with a straight grain. It has a good cover of golden brown to yellow varnish & ebony fittings with a stringvision key-peg fitted to the A string. This cello is in outstanding condition.

Overall this cello has a brilliant & bright sound with a clear & focused tone. It has powerful projection & is very well-balanced across all registers. This cello would suit tertiary level study & the advanced to professional level soloist. It is currently fitted with Larsen Magnacore strings which add a level of richness & complexity to the overall brightness of this cellos sound.
