This violin was made by John Johnston in 2005, in his workshop in Rozelle, Sydney. Having started out self-taught, making violins from native Australian timbers, Johnston eventually attended and graduated from the prestigious Newark School of Violin Making in the late 1970's, moving back to Australia to set up a workshop in 1982. He has since made well over two hundred violins, violas, and cellos, many of which are used in orchestras worldwide.

This violin is labeled "John D. Johnston / at Rozelle Sydney. 2005. / copy of: Guarneri 1743". The body measures 356mm along the back, 169mm across the upper bouts, and 213mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of moderately flamed maple of a medium curl, with matching ribs and scroll. The top is of a finely grained spruce, with a gold-amber varnish, and fittings of boxwood. The violin is in good condition.

This violin has quite a raw, powerful sound, that projects a sense of smooth strength at a distance. It is well suited to solo and chamber playing of a tertiary level or higher, and would fit a player looking for an intense sound that doesn't lack control.
