This violin was made by John Johnston in 2001, in his workshop in Rozelle, Sydney. Having started out self-taught, making violins from native Australian timbers, Johnston eventually attended and graduated from the prestigious Newark School of Violin Making in the late 1970's, moving back to Australia to set up a workshop in 1982. He has since made well over two hundred violins, violas, and cellos, many of which are used in orchestras worldwide.

This violin is labelled "John D. Johnston / Fecit Sydney, 2001". The body measures 357mm along the back, 171mm across the upper bouts and 210mm across the lower bouts. It has a two piece back of moderately flamed maple with a medium curl, with matching ribs and scroll. The top is of tightly grained spruce, and the violin has golden-amber varnish with boxwood fittings. The instrument is in good condition.

This violin has a warm, well-balanced sound, which has a small amount of brightness and bite for clean articulation, but is mostly characterised by its evenness and full tone. In the lower registers, it tends towards a broader, smooth sound, while the E string is more sonorous and sweet. It projects well, and would suit someone playing at a tertiary level or higher.
