W. E. Hill & Sons (1887–1992) was a London-based firm that specialised in violins and other string instruments, and bows. It was also known as William Hill & Sons or William E. Hill & Sons. Founded by William Ebsworth Hill at 38 New Bond Street, London in 1887, the name W. E. Hill & Sons built on a long family history of violin making going back to William Ebsworth's great grandfather, Joseph Hill. The firm soon gained a widespread reputation for excellence in repairs, making of instruments, bows, cases and fittings as well as instrument identification and authentication. Many fine craftsmen worked for the firm, and they were particularly famous for their bow makers, their work renowned for its character and consistency.

This cello bow is stamped "W.E. Hill & Sons", with a year stamp and match mark of "62 L", and two horizontal nicks on the lower outside edges of the head mortice, the maker's mark of William Johnson, who worked at Hills between 1894 and 1940. These horizontal marks are typical of his work from after 1904. It has an octagonal stick of pernambuco measuring 71.5cm in length and weighing 81.0 grams, with a silver lapping and tip lining, and a leather grip. The frog is of ebony with a Parisian eye, mounted in silver, and with a silver button. It is in good condition and sold with a certificate from Tim Toft.

This cello bow has a strong, flexible stick, which has enough weight and fullness in the upper half to give its sound a solid core. It lends itself more to legato and wider gestures than it does to spiccato, though off-the-string strokes are still quite effortless. As such, it is most suitable to soloistic playing, and would be suitable players at a professional level.
