German Viola Labelled Eugen Wahl 16.5"

This viola is labelled "Eugen Wahl / Geigenbaumeister / Karlsruhe 1/B". The body measures 423mm along the back, 197mm across the upper bouts and 251mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of highly flamed maple of a tighter curl, with matching ribs and scroll. It has a top of very tightly grained spruce, with ebony fittings, and the varnish is a light red-brown on a gold ground. It is in good condition.

This viola has a well-rounded, full sound, with an easy action and requiring little effort to create a large sound. It would work very well as an orchestral or chamber instrument, blending well with other inner voices, and would most suit someone playing at a secondary school level or higher.
