This violin bow was made by James Tubbs in London in around 1885. James Tubbs was born in 1835, and was one of the most well-respected English bow-makers of his time, matching both the quality and output of the best makers in Paris and Mirecourt. He was born into the Tubbs family, who are well known for continuing the legacy of English bow making from the Dodd family, who led the tradition in England for much of the 18th and early 19th Centuries. James Tubbs first worked for his father, training within his family as was common at the time, before he began collaborating with William Ebsworth Hill in the late 1850's.

The bow is stamped "Jas. Tubbs" and weighs 59.6 grams. It has a round stick of pernambuco, measuring 73.2 cm, with a silver lapping, leather grip, and silver tip lining. It has a silver mounted frog with a pearl eye, and a silver button. It is in good condition.

It has a remarkably soft and smooth feel to the fingers with feedback from the string being translated very clearly into the hand, making for a very comfortable, tactile bow. The stick is springy and flexible, with lots of power readily available for quick changes in mood, character, or inflection. Off-the-string strokes are easy to use, and are secure in a wide spectrum of points along the stick. This bow would be most suitable for a player at a professional level or higher, and would excel especially well in solo repertoire.
