This violin was made by Amédée Dieudonné in Mirecourt in 1927. Born in 1890 in Mirecourt, Dieudonné learned the art of violin making from Gustave Bazin. Prior to opening his own workshop in Mirecourt in 1920, he worked for the Darché firm in Brussels. His career spanned 40 years, where he built violins both for himself, and other firms including Rudolph Wurlitzer, Moennig, Blanchard, Laberte, Mangenot, and Millant. His work is primarily based on the Cremonese style, and often is finished with an amber-red varnish.
This violin is labelled "Amédée Dieudonne / No. 91 Mirecourt Anno 1927" and bears his signature on the instrument above the label. The body measures 357mm along the back, 168mm across the upper bouts and 210mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of highly flamed maple with a narrow curl, with matching ribs and scroll. The top is of a finely grained spruce and the instrument has a red-brown varnish with rosewood fittings. It is in good condition and sold with the original maker's certificate.
The violin has a sweet and broad sound which is innately French. Its low register provides rich overtones that fill the space in a room of any size, whilst the high register offers precision and focus. It responds quickly to changes in dynamics and bowing, and projects its tone in a beautiful manner no matter the volume. It would be well suited to players undertaking solo or ensemble performances.
