Why aged tone woods and ebony?
String instruments should be made from aged tone wood. The top of the violin is made from aged spruce, while the back, sides and scroll are made from aged maple. The aging process helps dry the wood out, creating better stability in the timber, increasing the durability, whilst also enhancing the resonance and acoustics of the instrument.
Ebony is a dense yet lightweight material, that is extremely durable. This hardiness means it won’t wear down or groove over time, offering greater longevity, and a nice feel and finish. Cheaper hardwoods used in many entry level instruments don’t offer the same levels of durability and hardiness needed for playing the violin. Ebony is used for the fingerboard, nut, pegs and chinrest.
Professional Instrument Set Up
Our beginner violins are all professionally set up by our team of luthiers and workshop technicians, right here in Sydney. An instrument that has not been correctly set up can often be difficult to play, difficult to tune, and generally sound terrible, which can be very discouraging for a player, especially a beginner. By having a correct setup, you make the instrument comfortable, responsive, and enjoyable to play.
A professional set up involves cutting and shaping the bridge, prepping the fingerboard, fitting the soundpost, fitting the pegs and sculpting the nut. For more information on a professional setup, click here.
