This cello was made by Andrea Schudtz in 2025 in Cremona. Schudtz was first introduced to violin making by his father Pavel Schudtz, a luthier who worked with the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and began studying at the International School of Violin Making in Cremona in 1991. At the school, he worked under Giorgio Scolari, Davide Negoni, and Stephano Conia, and worked in the workshop of Alexander Krylov in Cremona while at the School. He has since opened his own workshop, and has participated in several competitions, winning the 2nd prize at the National Violin Makers Competition in Baveno, Italy in 1993.
This cello is labelled "Andrea Schudtz Faciebat / Cremonæ Anno 2025" and bears a second label of "TRLLVS MATER / 1/6 18425 AN". It is based on a 'Stradivari Piatti' model. The body measures 759mm along the back, 350mm across the upper bouts and 447mm across the lower bouts. The back is in one piece of lightly-flamed maple with a broad curl, and the ribs and scroll and been made to match. The top is of a finely-grained spruce, and is finished in an amber-brown varnish with boxwood fittings.
