This cello was made by Rainer Beilharz in 2025 in Castlemaine, Australia. Beilharz began instrument making in 1982 at 18 years of age in Melbourne as an apprentice under John Ferwerda, and has since gone on to complete several years training in Germany under the likes of Bernhard Franke and Antoine Muller. In that time he received his Journeyman Certificate in Markneukirchen and his Master certificate with distinction. He returned to Australia in 1997 where he setup his workshop and began making instruments full time. Beilharz has partaken in numerous competitions and received many accolades, including, three certificates of merit and a four silver medals at the VSA competitions in the USA since 2012. His instruments are some of the most sought after in Australia, and are played internationally by members of the world's greatest symphony orchestras.
This cello is labelled "Rainer Beilharz Australia / 2025 / 166" and bears his signature; it is based on a Joseph Filius Guarneri model. The body measures 745mm along the back, 360mm across the upper bouts and 443mm across the lower bouts. The back has been made with two pieces of lightly flamed maple with a medium curl, and the ribs and scroll have been made to match. The top is of a widely grained spruce and has been lightly antiqued. The cello has been finished with a red-brown varnish on a golden ground, and holds ebony fittings.
This cello has a rich and powerful tone, and requires very little from players to project in a space of any size. It has an immediate response to dynamic and articulation changes making it very easy to play a range of repertoire on. The balance and control that this cello holds makes it an incredibly versatile instrument, capable of the delicacy and purity which Baroque playing requires, to the intensity and power of the Romantic concertos. It would be most suited to players at a professional level, performing solo or in an ensemble of any size.
