This violin was made by Roberto Cavagnoli in 2008 in Cremona. Cavagnoli was born in Brescia in 1975, and after graduating from the International School of Violin Making in Cremona, has since worked in the workshops of Angelo Sperzaga, Barbara Piccinotti, and James Robinson in Australia. He has taken part in many competitions over the years, winning a silver medal for sound for a cello at the VSA Competition in Portland in 2004, and a bronze medal at the XI International Triennial Competition in Cremona.

Today Roberto works in his own workshop in the centre of Cremona, via F. Aporti 21, and he makes violins, violas and cellos, following the antique Cremonese tradition.

This violin is labelled 'Roberto Cavagnoli / fecit in Cremona / 2008' and is signed on the bottom of the label. The body measures 354mm along the back, 164mm across the upper bouts and 205mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of well-flamed maple with a moderate, even curl, and with matching ribs and scroll. The top is of a finely grained spruce, and the violin has an orange-amber varnish with ebony fittings. It is in excellent condition.

It has a bright, dynamic sound, with a healthy degree of the Cremonese lustre, and a robust G and D string. It balances the strong lower register with a sonorous and clear E string, and with an easy action, it would be very suitable for performance at a tertiary or professional level.
