W.G. Luk Violin Sydney 2023
After working as a award winning carpenter, Luk began his career as a luthier in 1974. He was invited to relocate to Australia in 1990 to teach carpentry, which gave him the opportunity to perfect his musical instrument craft. Since then, he has become a highly valued maker and restorer and sits on the committee of the Chinese-Australian Music Society. He has participated and placed in several international violin making competitions.
This violin is labelled 'W. G Luk / Professional String Instruments / Designed and Handmade in Australia / Stradivari 1716 056-2023'. The body measures 356mm along the back, 168mm across the upper bouts and 206 across the lower bouts. It has a two piece back of lightly flamed maple and a narrow curl. The front is spruce with a narrow grain which broadens to the bouts. It is finished with golden varnish on a yellow ground, and boxwood pegs.
This violin has a warm, rich and well-balanced tone, and is even across all registers. It is very responsive to changes in bowing and dynamics, and feels quite easy to play. This violin would be well suited to players looking to complete their upper AMEB levels, or embark on tertiary study.
