This viola was made by Harry Vatiliotis in Sydney, in 1977. Vatiliotis was born in Cyprus in 1936, and after immigrating to Australia in the 1950's began working with NSW Railways, before beginning an apprenticeship with A. E. Smith at 17. An immensely prolific maker, he has made almost a thousand instruments, and is well respected globally for his instruments. Within Australia, he is also well known for public projects such as the "Powerhouse Twins", an experiment with the Powerhouse Museum to determine how much violins develop over time due to being played in and their environment.

It is labelled "C A Vatiliotis / Maker / Sydney 1987". The body measures 413mm along the back, 194mm across the upper bouts and 238mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of moderately flamed maple with a medium curl, and matching ribs and scroll. The top is a moderately grained spruce, and the violin is finished with rosewood pegs, a boxwood tailpiece and a light amber-brown varnish. It is in good condition.

This viola has a bright and focused sound. Its tone is balanced well across both the upper and lower registers, and has an immediate response to bowing and articulation changes. This viola would be a perfect fit for someone performing at a tertiary level or higher, and would be at home in a chamber, orchestral setting.
