This viola was made in Mittenwald in Germany around the start of the 20th Century. It is labelled "Antonius Stradivarius Cremonefis / Faciebat Anno 1734". It measures 398mm along the back, 186mm across the upper bout and 229mm across the lower bout. It has a two-piece back of maple which is moderately flamed with a medium curl, and the ribs and scroll have been made to match. The top is of a moderately grained spruce and it has been finished in a golden-brown varnish with some antiquing, and ebony fittings. It is in good condition.
This viola has a bright, direct sound, and projects well, particularly in the upper register. It is very responsive and and allows violists to play quite strongly, as there is a good amount of resistance between the string and the bow. This viola would be suited to students undertaking their upper AMEB levels or their HSC, and wanting to pursue further study on their instrument.
