This viola was made in Sydney by Guy Aubrey Griffin in 1937. Originally from Worcestershire in England, Griffin emigrated to Australia in 1924, where he began working in Sydney as Arthur Edward Smith's assistant. Griffin's work in Smith's Hunter Street store meant that he was exposed to many fine instruments that he had the opportunity to both examine, and copy in his own work. His lifelong friendship with Smith resulted in Griffin becoming a main shareholder in A E Smith & Co, and upon his retirement in November 1942, he dedicated more time to his craft, making a total of 173 violins, five violas, and one cello. Griffin passed in 1967, and remains one of the most highly regarded violin makers in Australia.

This viola is labelled "Guy Aubrey Griffin / Made in Sydney, 1937". The body measures 423mm along the back, 199mm across the upper bouts and 256mm across the lower bouts. The back is of a highly flamed maple in two pieces with a narrow curl, and the ribs and scroll have been made to match. The top is of a finely grained spruce, finished with an amber-brown varnish and fitted with rosewood pegs, and a Wittner tailpiece. It is in good condition.

This viola is characterised by its lively sound and the intensity that it projects on every note. It is buzzing with energy under the bowing arm and responds immediately to both the changes in bowing and dynamics. The tone is well balanced across both the upper and lower registers providing players with clarity and consistency throughout their performances. This instrument would be well suited for the solo or chamber musician at a tertiary level or higher.
