This violin bow was made by James Tubbs in London in around 1885. James Tubbs was born in 1835, and was one of the most well-respected English bow-makers of his time, matching both the quality and output of the best makers in Paris and Mirecourt. He was born into the Tubbs family, who are well known for continuing the legacy of English bow making from the Dodd family, who led the tradition in England for much of the 18th and early 19th Centuries. James Tubbs first worked for his father, training within his family as was common at the time, before he began collaborating with William Ebsworth Hill in the late 1850's.

The bow is stamped "Jas. Tubbs" and weighs 61.85 grams. It has a round stick of pernambuco, measuring 74.6 cm, with a silver lapping, leather grip, and silver tip lining. It has a silver fully-mounted frog with a pearl eye, and a one-piece silver button. It is in good condition.

This violin bow is soft and smooth to the touch, with changes in stroke direction almost imperceptible to the ear. It articulates every note very well, and excels in long legato passages; allowing every note to ring and sustain with deep clarity. This bow is easy to maintain even dynamics throughout the length of the bow with good responsiveness at both the frog and tip. This bow would be suited to orchestral or chamber players at a professional level.
