Alfred Bazin Stamped Charles Bazin Viola Bow c.1950
This bow was made by Charles Alfred Bazin in Mirecourt, France, 1950. Son of Charles Louis Bazin and grandson of notable bow maker Charles-Nicolas Bazin II, Charles Alfred began studying bow making in under his father in 1922. After his father's retirement in 1952, Charles Alfred inherited the family workshop along with one assistant. Despite having a small clientele due to his choice to not to sell bows to other firms, Charles Alfred continued the family tradition of bow making and remained prolific until his retirement in the 1980's, and was heralded throughout his career as a promising interpreter of his family's signature style.
The bow is stamped "Charles Bazin" and weighs 72.31 grams. It has a round stick of pernambuco, measuring 745mm, with silver lapping and a leather grip. The frog is of ebony, fully silver mounted with a parisian eye, and a one-piece silver button. It is in good condition.
This viola bow has a strong and well-balanced stick which projects a clear and crisp sound. It is very easy to control, and excels in playing shorter bow strokes such as sautillé and spiccato with very little effort. This bow would be most suitable for players at a tertiary level or above, and for solo or chamber repertoire.
