This violin was made by Paul Jombar in 1906 in Paris, France. Jombar began his violin making career as a pupil of Nestor Audinot between 1882 and 1886 and before establishing his own workshop in 1892, he worked at Gand and Bernardel. Much of Jombar's work was modelled after Stradivarius, however according to William Henley, author of the Universal Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers, he was known to "[depart] from the authority of tradition" and still achieve perfect workmanship. A highlight of his career was in 1901 when he was decorated with the 'Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur'. This instrument comes with a certificate of authenticity.
This violin is labelled "Paul Jombar / Luthier a Paria / No. 102 ann 1906". The body measures 359mm along the back, 166mm across the upper bouts and 208mm across the lower bouts. The back is made with one-piece of maple which is moderately flamed with a broad curl. The ribs and scroll have been made to match. The top is of a finely grained spruce. The violin has has been finished with a red varnish, and fitted with rosewood pegs and a boxwood tailpiece. The violin is in good condition.
This violin has a bright and sweet sound that is distinctly French. It has a lovely broad tone which carries across both the upper and lower registers, and players can easily draw out a delicate sound with very little effort. The sound is very clear and highly responsive to changes in dynamic and bow strokes. This violin would be most suited to musicians at a tertiary level and above and would be ideal for chamber or orchestral playing.
