Cedric Clarke Viola 16" Sydney Australia 1996

This viola was made by Cedric Clarke in 1996 in Sydney. Born in Turramurra, New South Wales, in 1929, Cedric Clarke learned the craft from his father, C. H. S. Clarke. In 1944, he joined the workshop of A. E. Smith, where he gained experience in the Sydney school of violin making. In 1947, Clarke joined the restoration workshop of Lloyd Adams. When Adams moved to the United States, Clarke took over the business, establishing a career centred on repair and restoration while continuing to make his own instruments. Although his output was relatively small, Clarke was known for his excellent workmanship. He made violins and violas in Sydney, including instruments from the 1990s, continuing a tradition of Australian making connected to the workshops of A. E. Smith and Lloyd Adams.

The viola labelled "Cedric Clarke / Anno 1996". The body measures 411mm along the back, 191mm across the upper bouts and 241mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of highly flamed maple with a narrow curl and matching ribs and scroll. The top is of a finely-grained spruce which broadens towards the bouts, the varnish is a dark gold-brown, and the pegs, chinrest, and tailpiece are all ebony. This instrument is in good condition.

It has a bright and direct sound, with a very clear top register. Along with its easy sense of open resonance, it has a light and quick response, making it the perfect viola for soloistic repertoire. The lower end is quite rich and retains a lot of energy as well, which helps the viola support itself as an inner voice in many chamber scenarios as well. This viola would be very well suited for a player at a tertiary or professional level.
