Giovanni Grancino Violin Milan Italy c.1685

This violin was made by Giovanni Grancino, probably the most important figure of the Milanese tradition of violin making. Crafted in around 1685, this remarkable instrument represents the mature work of a maker whose influence helped establish Milan as a significant centre of Italian lutherie. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from Florian Leonhard Fine Violins, London (December 2025), the violin is certified as the work of Giovanni Grancino, with the exception of the scroll, which was made by a member of the renowned Rugeri family of Cremona. The instrument bears a facsimile label reading "Francesco Rugeri detto il Per, in Cremona 1674." Further supporting the attribution, an extensive dendrochronological examination confirms a construction date consistent with circa 1685.

The back is constructed from two pieces of quarter-cut maple displaying a narrow ascending figure from the centre joint, with matching ribs. The table is of two-pieces of spruce with irregular fine to medium-width grain. The instrument is finished in a rich red-brown varnish over a yellow-brown ground. Florian Leonhard describes the violin as "a typical example of the maker's work", noting its elegant, somewhat lengthened model and good state of preservation. The instrument measures 353mm in back length, with widths of 164mm (upper bouts), 111mm (middle bouts), and 200mm (lower bouts).

As one of the leading makers of the Grancino family, Giovanni Grancino's instruments are prized for their historical importance, refined craftsmanship, and distinctive tonal character. Fine examples from this period are increasingly rare and are highly sought after by collectors, professional musicians, and investors in exceptional stringed instruments.
