Glanville & Co. Daintree D30 Violin
The D30 is the third instrument in the Daintree range by Glanville & Co. Glanville & Co. is a local workshop located right in the heart of Sydney. They were founded on the belief that all Australians should have access to music education and quality instruments that will nurture their development. It is through the fusion of technology & tradition that Glanville & Co. have been able to produce high-quality, customisable, innovative & affordable instruments that are entirely Australian made. This instrument comes with a certificate of authenticity & professional photos.
The D30 has a two-piece, well-flamed maple back & the top is made from spruce. This instrument is based on a Stradivari violin model. This violin has a good cover of dark-brown varnish and has been antiqued with a high-level of detail. The colour & antiquing of this violin has been inspired by the dark tones of the Daintree Rainforest. The D30 has ebony fittings & a Teller bridge.
Due to the superior timber, varnish & workmanship the D30 has a beautifully well-rounded, open & broad sound. Overall, this instrument is deeply resonant & powerful, creating a superbly balanced & smooth tone between both the high & low registers. This instrument would be suitable for the high-level intermediate to advanced player or the serious amateur. This violin is strung with Larsen Virtuoso strings to add a level of brightness & focus to the overall sound.

The difference between beginner and intermediate instruments
An intermediate violin is designed to help players move beyond the basics and begin developing their own individual sound. Compared to beginner instruments, these violins are crafted from higher-quality, well-seasoned tone woods and fitted with higher-grade strings, allowing for greater responsiveness, a wider dynamic range, and richer tonal colours. This gives developing players the tools they need to approach more demanding repertoire with greater confidence, control, and musical expression.
More time and attention is also dedicated to the setup. Carefully adjusted by our qualified workshop technicians, intermediate instruments are optimised for improved projection and resonance — qualities that become increasingly important as students begin participating in ensemble playing, examinations, and stage performances.
Why aged tone woods and ebony are important
All string instruments, whether for a beginner or a professional, should be made from aged tone wood. The top of the violin is made from spruce, while the back, sides and scroll are made from maple. The aging process helps dry the wood out, creating better stability in the timber, increasing the durability, whilst also enhancing the resonance and acoustics of the instrument.
Ebony is a dense yet lightweight wood that is extremely durable. These qualities are essential for high-wear areas such as the pegs, nut, and fingerboard, as they won’t wear down or groove over time. Cheaper hardwoods used in many entry-level instruments don’t offer the same level of durability and hardness needed for playing the violin, and can lead to issues with tuning and playability.
Our Professional Instrument Set Up
Our intermediate instruments are professionally set up by our experienced luthiers and workshop technicians right here in Sydney.
A string instrument that hasn’t been properly set up can be hard to play, difficult to keep in tune, and often produces a poor sound. A correct setup ensures the instrument is comfortable, responsive, and enjoyable to play.
A professional setup includes shaping and fitting the bridge, preparing the fingerboard, fitting the soundpost and pegs, and sculpting the nut to ensure correct string spacings. For more information on a professional setup, click here.
