Paul Kelly Violin Paris France 1926

This violin was made by Paul Kaul in 1926 in Paris, France. Originally born 1875 in Mirecourt, Kaul began his violin-making career apprenticing under Thibouville-Lamy. He moved from there to work for Silvestre and Maucotel in Paris throughout 1900-1905, and eventually established his own workshop in Nantes in 1907, before relocating it to Paris in 1928. He was known for modelling his instruments after the old Italian makers, such as Maggini and Stradivari, and they were thought to be very artistically and scientifically constructed.

This violin is labelled "Paul Kaul 172 / Paris - An 1926". The body measures 359mm along the back, 166mm along the upper bouts, and 205mm along the lower bouts. The back is in one piece of highly flamed maple with a broad to moderate curl, and has matching ribs and scroll. The top is of a finely grained spruce and has been finished with a red-brown varnish on a golden ground, and ebony fittings.

This violin holds a tone which is typically French: bright, sweet and the utmost clarity. It has a brilliant projection and a very direct core sound. Players need to put in very little effort when playing to produce a good sound and tone across all registers and dynamics. It would be very well suited to a soloist or chamber musician at a tertiary or professional level.
